One of the fundamental achievementsof education is to enable people to utilisetheir knowledge in problem-solving. In fact, many educationists and philosophers assertthis as the central goal of education. Accordingto Pring (2000), education referstoexperiencesor instructions which nurturethe capacities (the concepts and skills, themental operations and dispositions) for subsequent problem-solving and enquiry.Whitehead (1970) suggestedthat education is the acquisition of the art of knowledgeutilisation. Dewey(cited in Pring, 2000) believedthat worthwhile learning enablespeople to adapt successfully to new situations and to identify and deal with problems asthey arise. He said that greater emphasis should be put on the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills. According to Gagné (1985), cumulative learningultimately results in the establishment of capabilities that allow anindividual to solve awidevariety of novel problems
